Prompting

Giving context

State the role, the audience, the goal and the facts the model needs, so that it stops guessing.

A generative AI model only knows what the prompt tells it. Giving context means saying which role it should play, who the answer is for, what it will be used for and which facts it must rely on: your product, your customer, your house style.

Without context, the model fills the gaps with generic assumptions. The answer sounds right but misses the target, and the time saved is lost in rewrites. With the right context, the first draft is often good enough to work from.

A useful check before sending a prompt: could a new colleague do the task with only what you wrote? If not, the missing information is also the context the model lacks.
