Prompting

Using examples

Show the model one or two examples of the expected answer rather than describing it at length.

An example of the expected output, a technique known as few-shot prompting, often says more than a paragraph of instructions: the model picks up the format, the level of detail and the tone from it.

Examples are especially useful for repetitive tasks such as sorting requests, rewriting product descriptions or extracting fields from a document. They also carry risks: a single example can be copied too literally, and an example that contains a mistake spreads it.

Choose examples that are representative and varied, mark them clearly as examples, and check that they respect the constraints you set. Two good examples usually beat five mediocre ones.
