Critical thinking about AI
Spotting hallucinations
Recognise invented facts, sources or figures stated with confidence in an AI answer.
A hallucination is content that a generative AI presents as fact but that is false or invented: a quotation, a legal reference, a study, a figure, a product feature. The model produces plausible text, not verified facts.
Hallucinations are hard to spot because they are written in the same confident tone as correct information. Once pasted into a report, an email to a customer or a decision memo, they become the company's mistake.
Warning signs include precise references that cannot be found, figures without a source and details that are a little too convenient. The reflex: check the specific claims against a reliable source before reusing them.
