Using AI at work

Choosing a script over a model

Recognise mechanical, repeatable tasks where a formula, a script or existing software beats a generative model.

Some tasks follow exact rules: converting formats, adding up totals, sorting a list, filling in a template. A spreadsheet formula, a script or a feature of your existing software does them in exactly the same way every time.

A generative model works by probability: it can get a calculation or a conversion subtly wrong, differently on each run, and it costs more to run. Using it for deterministic work adds risk without adding value.

A simple test: if the task can be written as a rule that always holds, a deterministic tool is the right choice. Keep generative AI for what calls for judgement about language.
