Using AI at work
Keeping a human accountable
Leave decisions that affect people, money or the law to a person who can explain and answer for them.
AI can prepare a decision; it cannot be held responsible for it. Hiring, dismissing, granting credit, rejecting a claim or committing the company in a contract call for a person who decides and can justify the choice.
The GDPR gives people rights against decisions based solely on automated processing, and the EU AI Act requires human oversight of high-risk AI systems, such as those used in recruitment or credit. Beyond compliance, a decision nobody can explain erodes the trust of customers and employees.
In practice, AI can gather information, suggest options or draft the answer, but a named person reviews, decides and remains accountable. If nobody would put their name to the decision, it should not be taken.
